Isle of Man Glass/St John's Crystal

The following piece has been attributed to Isle of Man Glass, also known as St John's Crystal, because the accompanying certificate and box bears that company's name. We would like to thank Ron Wheeler of Artius Glass who has investigated the matter (2018). Apparently, any piece having the flame pontil mark on the base was not made by Isle of Man Glass but made by IOWSG during the early years of an arrangement made between the two companies, which existed we believe between 1979 and 1985. Isle of Man Glass was never supplied with the embossing ‘Flame Logo’ tool and so it is not possible that glass thus marked was made there. The tool was only supplied to Kerry Glass. The label/leaflet and box was also supplied by IOWSG.

Design Council label with St John's Crystal triangular label

This combination of a Design Council label, awarded to IOWSG for the Azurene design, with a St John's Crystal triangular label has been seen on a vase just once. It is supposed that IOWSG sent the Design Council labels to St John's Crystal in 1979, during the first year of an arrangement made between the two companies.
